Explore the cold arctic fjords!
The late fall and winter months are some of the best seasons to kayak around Tromsø. The water is crystal clear, the air is crisp and clean and the early afternoon sunsets are beyond beautiful. It begins with the bright colors of fall, with white tipped peaks, untill the landscape is covered in white.
In the darkest period from the middle of november to end of january we are all about polar nights with the stars twinkling 24 hours a day. Kayaking in the Arctic winter is actually warmer than you think!
Together we suit up in drysuits and stay warm kayaking our way through the sounds, islands and archipelagos, all covered in snow. Even though the Arctic winter is cold and unforgiving, a large amount of wildlife is thriving in the food rich areas up here, both under and over the sea surface. Look out for common eiders gathering urchins, White-tailed Sea Eagles scouting for prey, or a shy otter swimming away with its latest fish catch. Often a seal or two will also curiously show up by our side and follow us for a while.
After the kayaking we will return to our basecamp, lights up the fire and enjoy a hot beverage and snacks and share memories of the day:)
This tour is arranged every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturdays throughout the winter season when booked from Tromsø city centre or if you are meeting directly at basecamp.
If you are booking with a transfer from Sommarøy Arctic hotel our available days are Tuesday and Fridays. Please make sure you book the correct option below:)
During winter time we mostly kayak out from the Kaldfjorden/Eidkjosen area. Due to more stable weather and sea conditions, this is a better area for kayak adventures in the winter time. We may go to Sommarøy if the conditions are suitable. We provide transfer to and from both Sommarøy Arctic Hotel (approximately 40 minutes) and the Tromsø city centre (approximately 30 min) to our paddle location for the day. Choose this option whe you book.
You may join us directly at the paddle location if you have your own car. We will provide you with the information where to meet.
This is a guided tour and you do not need previous experience to join us. Our local and certified guides are experienced with kayaking in the cold environments, and will give you a safety briefing and introduction to winter sea kayaking before setting out. On our winter tours we paddle sturdy double kayaks, but you may paddle singles on request if you can document sufficient kayaking skills. The guide will pick a location according to the weather and sea conditions to make sure you have a safe trip.
Please note that the tour is weather dependent and may have to be rescheduled or cancelled due to safety reasons. You will receive a full refund if you're not able to join a rescheduled tour.
This tour is also suitable for groups, and can be suited to your wishes on request. Please contact us for more information.
